As a young man Paul Weston CEO (Avant Garde Ideals) grew up in a number of competitive environments. From academics to the sports field, he was always looking for a challenge. Paul was able to excel in a number of sports including football, cricket and rugby. It was Paul’s rugby career where his passion lied and represented his schools, captained his university and made an impact on the county scene thriving in the team environment and consistently leading by example on the pitch.
With no clear career direction in mind he was able to gain his HGV class 2 drivers license and spent 3 years on the open road having the opportunity to see all parts of the UK and a number of European cities. Paul enjoyed this time as he enjoys travelling but soon came to the realization that he did not want this life in the future as if he was going to have a family he wanted to spend time with them rather than being ‘stuck in a lorry’! At this juncture in his life, still with no real career focus he took the opportunity to attend university and gain a BA/BSc in the philosophy of education combined with the science of sport and exercise. This 3 year period enabled him to gain both academic and life experience. After graduation Paul Weston CEO of Avant Garde ideals still had no set career in mind other than the fact he did not want to work for someone else and be dictated to about his hours, his pay and therefore his lifestyle.
Paul investigated and researched a number of business ventures in the sports development, alternative sports, and sports coaching fields. However with no real entrepreneur experience or the capital to invest he needed to find a proven model he could follow.
By chance he stumbled across a company who were willing to train him up in event sales and marketing at no charge, with the opportunity to set up on his own should he see it through. With no previous experience this was a big risk, especially as he would be working purely on his own performance. However having educated himself through books he noted how some of the most successful people in sport and business had some common traits. Mr. James Kahn of Dragons Den fame advised aspiring entrepreneurs to “observe the masses and do the opposite”, so Paul did just that. Looking at the lifestyles and future prospects of friends, family and the majority of the general public he realized that the corporate structure would simply not allow him to achieve the future he yearned for, a future that would allow him to ‘eat from a menu, rather than the price list’ as and when he pleased.
Delving deeper he asked himself if he too had the common traits of the successful people he had read about, those being; an unbelievable work ethic, a positive solution orientated attitude, the ability to stick to his guns when all around were falling by the whey side, and had to understand that most successful people are always told they are crazy. Paul Weston felt assured he would at least tick the first three of these boxes, and was soon to realize the fourth would also be true. He saw the opportunity in front of him as a real structure to achieve what he had always said he wanted, a chance to be his own boss, to work when he wanted, write cheques as opposed to receive them, but most importantly to never have to rely on anyone else, no other company or state to provide for him other than himself. He also grasped very early on that if he wanted all of this, something he had never had before, he would also have to be prepared to do things he had never done before. A relative short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain was needed and with few other people giving him a chance to achieve he committed 100%.
Throughout his training, Paul Weston CEO Avant Garde Ideals had many ups and downs, many doubts and moments of weakness; all of these he understood were in some way shape or form moulding him for his future success. By the end of his training he was a well-rounded individual now with the ability to pass what he had learned onto others but still with the humility and honesty to continue to be a good student. Most emphatically it was Paul’s ability to transfer his competitive edge from sport to business. He has now opened his first business in the Hampshire area in June of 2012 and has already surpassed expectations by establishing Avant Garde Ideals as the front-runner in the region for event brand awareness and customer acquisition working on behalf of a number of major national and international companies in the first 10 weeks of trading. This is just the tip of the iceberg however. Now having expanded into Manchester, Edinburgh and Newcastle, the goal is to continue at this pace and have a presence in 15 locations across the UK in the next 18 months so that the four commonalities he shares with some of his inspirational role models will be taken to a whole new level.
Paul Weston CEO Avant Garde Ideals priority now is to pass on the opportunity he has had to other people and allow them to realize that whatever they want in life is possible, as long as they are prepared to work for it. He believes that being ‘Avant Garde’ i.e. a person or group of people who invent or promote new techniques or concepts, and consider themselves to be ultra modern, advanced, or ahead of their time, is a steadfast way to ensure a lifestyle of choice.
